Kitchen Conundrums!

The kitchen revamping is finally moving along. We have had a few glitches along the way! My kitchen is 15 years old, and it was done custom at the time so the cabinets are truly in good shape and classic so it makes no sense for me to rip them out. A few changes will be made such as the corbels that flank the stove and sink will be replace with stream lined ones that are much more simple in look. I still need to choose paint color but I think I have narrowed that down to a few choices. The floor at first gave me a heart attack as it appeared red before the finish was applied! Thank goodness the brown immediately surfaced upon application of amber toned finish.
It is hard to make choices when you know this may not be your  forever home, although I do not see us going anywhere in the near future one never knows.  Kitchens can be expensive and I am learning just now much cost has increased since it's been over a year since I did a kitchen project.  The price of marble has sky rocketed! I had my heart set on calcutta premium and received the quote last week for my side counters, not including island or butlers pantry and it was $17,000.00.  Since this is not new cabinetry and I am not building my dream home that cost doesn't make sense for us at this time. So, it was back to the drawing board this past week and I am seeking "White Carrara" or  Quartz. Stay tuned as it unfolds, we are hopeful to see it all together in about 6 weeks!

  2. How exciting, Karolyn. I look forward to seeing what you do. We're about to do a little update to our kitchen too - like yours, this hopefully isn't our forever home, but we'll be here for awhile so I'm finally changing a few things I don't like about our mostly-lovely kitchen. But since it isn't the dream home, we'll be going with the white Carrera, too. Can't wait to be inspired by what you do - I'm sure it will be lovely!

Hope you've been well the last couple weeks, dear! XOXO

  3. Karolyn, it is hard to justify spending that sort of money when as you said it is not your forever home. We did a kitchen update about 4 years ago and while we were at it we priced marble for our master bath, $11,500 for two large vanities. Needless to say we did not go that route either.

I love the dark island! I think the kitchen is going to be fabulous, and I too am looking forward to seeing it.

  5. Karolyn, this is such a great post. We did our kitchen in 2009 and though not needing an update quite yet, I know it will down the road. And, I think it's hard to do when you've already done a quite nice kitchen, with custom cabinetry, etc….I love your color selections. When we did our renovation, we painted the family room, etc…Edgecomb Gray and took it into the kitchen walls and it tied everything together. Can't wait to see it come together!

    Happy Monday!

  6. Oh, it's so much more difficult when we design for ourselves, isn't it?!! Why is that? I guess because we know (or have to find out) every possible choice in the world before making a selection!
All of it sounds fabulous. I especially love the dark island. Looking forward to seeing it all come together!

  7. Oh Karolyn.. I can relate to the sky rocketing costs. It really does snow ball and always takes longer than you think. We did go with the Calcutta marble .. and have had to make concessions in other areas to off set the cost. We did look at Quartz and its a great option. I smiled when you said the floor color didn't look right. These things happen and its all part of the journey. Can't wait to see more and hang in there:)

  11. Sky rocketing prices never help! A friend and I just had this conversation the other day. A good choice is never a bad mistake. Thank you for sharing along the way as I aleays learn from others. The good, the bad, and the honesty. By the way, it's looking great!

  13. This is sooo exciting! Looking great, you have made such progress. Yes marble prices are INSANE. Did you look at the quartzite? Its not much less than marble but a bit......something worth looking at. I look forward to seeing your beautiful project evolve!

  17. What color did you choose for your island? I'm wanting to paint mine a charcoal grey as well.
