I need The Scoop On Coops!

We finally dismantled the old trampoline! I would like to say I was sad to see it go but that would be a lie. I have a wonderful 12 by about 25 ft of stone filled railroad tie edged plot of land that I need to do something with. My first thought is vegetable garden/chicken enclosure.  I am not sure if I am up to the task but considering my father was raised on a farm in Hungary I would have plenty of help! I found some great ideas from Pinterest that I would love to share with you. The only problem I have is that there are so many great ideas out there that I don't know which one to do or where to begin. I would gladly take any advice!  I know which ones I am leaning towards and a raised bed garden would be the way I would go, but besides that I could use some input. HELP!

Plot of land in question!

Gets great sun and a brook runs next to it so I have two ways of getting water!

These are the eggs I bought at the Farmers Market this past weekend. They are actually Duck eggs and they made the best omelette ever!

  1. So envious! I recommend emailing Brooke over at Velvet and Linen. She built an amazing one at her Patina Farm home in Oaji. I'm looking forward to seeing what you select.

  3. I love both ideas of a chicken coop and a vegetable garden, so, you might consider building both…with the chicken coop being of adequate size to accommodate the amount of animals you’d like, and a smallish vegetable garden adjacent to it. The use of appropriate fencing for each is most important to protect your investment. And, the choice of wood in an exterior setting is difficult. In our part of the country, pressure-treated wood and cedar are basically the best choices, but, you can’t use pressure-treated wood in a vegetable garden (especially for the raised beds) because the chemicals can leach into the soil. Cedar is expensive and hard to find in 2 inch thickness (which is preferable for the raised beds). You can find composite woods such as Trex in 1 inch thickness. Gardener’s Supply sells great corners and connectors for building raised beds. https://www.gardeners.com/buy/gardening/raised-bed-gardening/ …..Cedarcide sells a great wood stabilizer that is all natural called Cedarshield. http://www.cedarcide.com/product/cedarshield-deck-dock-fence-exterior-wood-waterproofer/ ……Good luck with your project. I am sure you will design it beautifully.

  10. How fun!!! I would love to have chickens and a vegetable garden!!! It would work great in that space. I unfortunately have black thumbs so am no help to you. If I were you, I would do both...if I were me, I would use it as a bocce court. :) Can't see what you come up with!!

  11. Karolyn, I was shopping for a hammock for Father's Day, and received this advertisement from Hayneedle http://www.hayneedle.com/product/merryproductshabitatchickencoop.cfm They have some well priced coops that might be a "starter home" for your chicks.
